THE GENTS studio demos – 1963 German Twist and Rock ‘n’ Roll music

THE GENTS studio demos – 1963 German Twist and Rock ‘n’ Roll music

In 1963 The Gents were asked into the studio by Hans-Arno Simon, German muzak specialist, to record for his Simon Records label. The result were 2 and a half 7” records which didn’t do the band any justice. At these sessions they laid down a couple of other tunes that weren’t used, unfortunately, but also a real schmaltzy tune (no.9) that thankfully was never released. I’ve enclosed it for completion’s sake.

The Gents 1963 were: Sundolf Köhler, voc, lg, Rainer Lange, dr, Bahne Markowski, voc, rg, Manfred Markowski, voc, rg, Günther Schult, voc, b.

All the following tracks, except no. 8, of course, were recorded in Hamburg at Studio Trede.

1 THE GENTS – Gents Boogie
2 THE GENTS – Say Mama (voc. Sundolf)

3 THE GENTS – Sleep Walk
4 THE GENTS – Lucille Theme

5 THE GENTS – Just Around The Corner (instrumental version)

6 THE GENTS – My Little Blondie

7 THE GENTS – Western Melody

8 THE GENTS im Deutschlandfunk Radio „Der Aktuelle Plattenteller“

9 THE GENTS – Heute Nacht unter Sternen (voc.
Sundolf)

There are more Gents-live recordings among the older posts and there are more to come.

THE STORMS, Leigh Park, Havant, England, live at the Star-Club Karlsruhe, 1965

The Storms were an English band from Leigh Park in Havant near Portsmouth. They toured Germany for almost a year, playing mostly monthly residences all across Germany from the Star-Palast in Kiel in the north to Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the south. The group line-up was Chris Dennis, org, rg, Rob Tall, voc, Bernie Morley, b, Mick Eveleigh, lg, Paul Acourt, dr.

The band had entered Germany as a quartet, but in Kiel they recruited Chris Dennis, who had been in Liverpudlian Lee Curtiss‘ All Stars.

These recordings were made in February 1965 at the Star-Club in Karlsruhe, where the band shared a residency with The Silver Strings from Düsseldorf. The Silver Strings were famous for the long hair, and Scotty, their lead singer, had about the longest hair in Rock ‘n’ Roll then.

The recordings you can listen to were made on a cheap reel-to-reel recorder and the sound quality at the beginning is far from perfect, but it’ll get better into the next tracks.

You will see more of the Star-Club in Karlsruhe and The Storms if you open the website Shakin' All Over (https://www.shakin-all-over.de/?page_id=1173).
