FREAKS GALORE 8 - THE GOSPEL OF FREAKDOM

FREAKS GALORE 8

THE GOSPEL OF FREAKDOM

according to Luke Haines and Sonic Smith-d

Part 8 of the obviously not finished story of Freaks in music. Well, I gave you Vol. 9 at the end of the year, and I promised to fill in on Vol. 8. Here it is. The first one in 2026. So a happy new year to you all, and stay tuned!

I know, it took a good while, but travelling abroad, writing a book, holding a speech, my honorary job as a chairman, the honorary work in the historical library etc. – all these things kept me from completing this compilation. However, I’ve also finished Freaks Galore 10 – so watch out for it. It will be uploaded soon.

All the acts featured here truly deserve the status of Freakness. I wonder where I come into the picture. Would perseverance and obsession qualify? At least I’m guilty of adding a bit of eccentricity to some people’s lives. I hope it does them good.

01. TREATMENT    DISSOLVING (British magic mushroom-fed Freaks)

02. ADJEEF THE POET    IEKK! I‘M A FREAK (self-explanatory)

03. SUN RA    ROCKET NUMBER NINE (among the top 3 of Freaks in Jazz)

04. CAPTAIN LOCKHEED & THE STARFIGHTERS     BOARD MEETING/THE SONG OF THE GREMLIN (German Defense Minister Franz Joseph Strauss‘ Starfighter G-104 acquisition disaster - a Brit‘s view - Paul Rudolph: not credited)

05. ALICE COLTRANE    ISIS AND OSIRIS (mixing Indian and Egyptian myth and religion - reference to Dr Justus Ostermeier in Wilhelm Raabe‘s “Ein Frühling“)

06. SLADE    THIS GIRL (Freaks! So convicted! They got disrespect and abuse!)

07. TEX & THE HORSEHEADS    BIG BOSS MAN (Texacala Jones [born Linda Yacoubian] was definitely the wildest, freakiest woman in Cowpunk)

08. CRASS    BIG A LITTLE A (rapping before it became fashionable and determined anarchists with a no-bars attitude = Freaks)

09. FATIMA MANSIONS    SHINY HAPPY PEOPLE (Luke Haines‘ obsessed with them, so again...)

10. YAHOWHA 13    CAMP OF THE GYPSIES (Father Yod and his loonies with a truly terrifying song)

11. FUNKADELIC    WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (George Clinton - the most flamboyant Freak ever)

12. SUN RA    ASTRO BLACK (Texacala was listening to it continuously, so it qualifies at least 98%)
