FREAKS GALORE 9
THE GOSPEL OF FREAKDOM
according to Luke Haines and Sonic Smith-d
BO DIDDLEY
Well, as things sometimes do, they get out of order. Well, I’ve got Freaks Galore 9 ready before volume 8. And as I wanted to give you something before the years closes, I just couldn’t wait, that’s why it is here.
I mentioned in one of the other volumes of Freaks Galore there was almost unlimited supply of Freaks in music… but maybe there was no greater Freak than Ellas McDaniel, the man with the big feet and the odd-shaped guitar. He was the master of the kneetrembler and had the incredible Duchess (or Lady Bo at times) play the rhythm guitar, shake the maracas or thump the tambourine, sing background vocals and swing her hips. To everybody‘s delight!
I've got a shelf full of albums by his majesty. A friend of mine once said that I knew more Bo Diddley songs than Bo himself… today it’s true. One of the great inventors of Rock music has gone in 2008. Why couldn’t he live forever? He would have supplied us with his unique tunes.
His Bo Diddley Beat was inspiration for thousands of musicians and his songs have been covered a million times… by acts diametrically opposed to each other.
Here’s a cross section of his work throughout the years. Enjoy it.
As there’s so much great Bo Diddley stuff, I might add a 2nd volume. Or even a 3rd one.
