Here’s another batch of Berlin’s Beatsters.

 

The Spacemen were founded in 1961 Berlin West, Germany, and carried on until 1967, when other matters became urgent. But they left a legacy of 29 live recordings from 1965. They show the band in good form, rough and occasionally unrefined. But they knew their tunes. Included are 3 bonus tracks, studio recordings from their LP “Beat À Gogo“, released on the cheapo label Tip (operating from Berlin). The tracks show The Spacemen were competent vocalists. “House Of The Rising Sun“ sports a female guest vocalist, my guess is, it is Tanja May.

 

The Spacemen were amateurs and mostly played at the weekends. In 1965 they had a regular gig at the Riverboat which lasted almost a year. The Riverboat was a club hosted by the Berlin Senate primarily for the entertainment of visiting West German teens – often on class trips. Remember, Berlin was a divided city then – surrounded by the socialist German Democratic Republic. There were just two transit ways to the former German capital and it was always a considerable hassle to get into the city. The border officials did not make it easy for you.

 As far as I know, The Spacemen never played in West Germany, the German Federal Republic. But in West Berlin they were a force.
