THE BEGINNING OF KRAUT ROCK II - live at Vestlandhalle in Recklinghausen 1970

JOIN INN 1972

Again, let us go down to the 3rd division of German Rock: the non-professionals. And let’s see if they have got something to offer?! And, please, don’t complain about the sound quality! It’s really good enough for a genuine listening pleasure. And just be happy, that somebody plugged his/her tape recorder in.

So this is: Part II of THE BEGINNING OF KRAUT ROCK

Recorded live at Vestlandhalle in Recklinghausen in January or February 1970.

The event was still headlined “7. Beat Festival”, although times had changed, but the organizers, town council officials, didn’t know. Even the German bands were now turning progressive and - as a side effect - throwing in their own compositions. Albeit, some were still a year or two behind…

Mystic Eyes of Hannover were probably not the veterans of the Beat scene who had been playing residencies and shows since 1965, and now, with a changed line-up, were going Blues. The Mystic Eyes – the originals featuring Günther Radny – had hailed from Regensburg, which is a long way down south. But Mojo Mama’s Band from Recklinghausen were the remains oft The Dakotas.

The Union Faces (sponsored by the Union brewery of Dortmund?) had been around for quite a while as the Faces, which they’d soon become again. And they obviously had learned their Vanilla Fudge lesson. “Stop! In The Name Of Love” – f…ing wonderful! Trash Prog Punk !! Third World War (the British band) couldn’t do it better.

Join Inn later recorded an album and was quite popular in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The Coloured could as well be spelled The Colour Red. Who knows? Well, somebody does (or did)!

But all these musicians were amateurs, mostly Grammar School or College boys. In their incompetence they would do some astonishing interpretations… just listen to “Whole Lotta Love”. (Great lyrics, by the way - truly spacebound!)

Yeah, some stuff here is really trashy and punky… nevertheless it turns me on. And additionally – from the historical point of view – it’s an example of what was going on on the highschool scene in Germany 1969/70. These bands could and will have played in most of the school auditoriums in their region then.

THE BEGINNING OF KRAUT ROCK - Recorded live at Vestlandhalle in Recklinghausen on 1st April 1970.

The event was headlined “Pop & Blues Labor der Amateure”, and it had been organized by the youth officer of the town of Recklinghausen in North Rhine-Westfalia, Kurt Oster, and his team.

This is a wonderful artefact of the first wave of German 70s bands. That’s when they finally decided to make their trip and are about to find their own style by grabbing what (especially the British) progressive bands gave them. The bands are accumulating every style that is popular at the time, and, mind, 9 of the 14 tracks here are band compositions.

Yes, Sidharta is the correct name of the band, as opposed to Hermann Hesse’s Siddharta.

Listen to the version of L.s.d., and experience the trashier side of Kraut Rock!
