Born as the skiffling Owl City Washboardmen in Uelzen in 1961, the band had developed via Merseybeat as The Randalls into a Soul Band: (William Thornton &) The Chicago Sect. On board were Ulf Krüger, dr, William “Billy” Thornton, voc, Michael Olisch, lg, Norbert Licht, sax, org, rg, Peter Wagner, sax, Uli Salm, b, Jürgen Ostermann, sax, and Matthias Salewsky, trp). But maybe there were other people in the band, as the line-up was everything but stable. Anyway, they played a good set at the Recklinghausen Festival.
If you want to know more about The Chicago Sect you might turn to the book „Shakin‘ All Over – die Beatmusik in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland 1963-1967“ (ISBN 978-3-946502-11-1), or better to the 72-page booklet coming with the CD „Beat im Norden” [Bear Family BCD 16476 AR], both written by Hans-Jürgen Klitsch. „Beat im Norden” also features the band’s single A-side “Chain Reaction”. On the record sleeve of the 7" it says “Beat in Lüneburg”.
