On May 26th, 1967, the King-Beats – a well-known Frankfurt Beat group who were doing lots of studio work – entered Biton Studio and recorded a scorching version of “Land Of 1000 Dances” with singer Nick Charles. I do not know anything about Nick Charles, nor do I have a photo. He probably was an American soldier stationed in the Frankfurt area. But that’s just a guess. Anyway, the song was edited into two parts, obviously intended for release on a 7” record. However, nothing came of it. So a great piece of music was left in the vaults. By the way, Little Lord, who also recorded with the King-Beats at Biton-Studio (Frankfurt) around the same time, added backing vocals to this recording. The King-Beats issued records under various names: The Strangers, The Ad-Libs, The Richard Brothers, Malepartus II and, of course, The King-Beats. The story of the King-Beats was published in the book “Shakin‘ All Over – die Beatmusik in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland 1963-1967“ (ISBN 978-3-946502-11-1) and in the 26-page-booklet coming with the CD “The King-Beats” (Bear FamilyBCD 16473 AR), both written by Hans-Jürgen Klitsch.
