THE TIREDS live 1965/66

The Tireds (soon to be a five-piece with Lionel Gräser on organ and vocals and rename the band Lionel & The Tireds) hailed from the small German town Gevelsberg (my home town) and played the local circuit. Not that they had many gigs lined up, but they succeeded in getting their name known. They were amateur league, sure, kind of 4^th division, but managed to have a single out and a track on a compilation of doubtful reputation. Their bass player Helmut “Charly” Trociewisz was a class mate and a friend of mine. Their rhythm guitarist and singer Eckehard “John” Dolinski first told me about the girl that has been my partner since New Year’s Eve 1967, but he was an arrogant guy nevertheless. When I compiled the “Ruhrgebeat” CD (Bear Family BCD 16474 AR) (on which their 7” B-side “Fairy Boy” was featured), I had contact with him again after 35 years, but the bullshit he told  made me stop communication soon. Rolf Kox was their stronghold – he could play the lead guitar better than anybody in town. Eberhard “Ebbi” Scharschmidt was a good drummer. Their sound is on the rough side – as you can easily hear. The Lionel and the Tireds story has been published in the booklet accompanying the above mentioned CD and the book „Shakin‘ All Over – die Beatmusik in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland 1963-1967“ (ISBN 978-3-946502-11-1) by Hans-Jürgen Klitsch.

The sound quality of these rehearsal tapes is far from perfect, but they are a good example of 4^th division Garage Beat.
